Behind the Art: Lindsay Elick

From the US, Lindsay Elick, a textile design student in Como, designed a silk scarf inspired by Como 1907.

Lindsay is an American student studying for her Masters in Textile Design – Product Research Sustainability at Accademia di Belle Arti Aldo Galli in Como. As soon as Lindsay got to Como last January, she went to a Como 1907 home game: “I’ve played soccer for 14 years, starting when I was five. At Stadio Sinigaglia, I immediately felt connected with what was happening around me: a sense of familiarity, passion, and an amazing atmosphere. I felt inspired and wanted to create a design putting Como 1907 at the centre.”

The opportunity came right away when Lindsay received an assignment in one of her classes at Accademia Galli: to design a silk scarf that could condense all the feelings and first impressions of Como. Como 1907 was definitely the answer.

Lindsay worked first on a scrapbook to gather all the elements and inspiration for her scarf design, where she collected anything from pictures to textiles: “I put together all the pictures I’ve taken around the lake, and I noticed a colour palette which I used for the design. All the elements come from the inspiration I got from the geometric structures of Stadio Sinigaglia. The rows of seats, the goal nets, the lines of the pitch, the penalty area and even the exterior entrance of the stadium portray uniformity and geometric shapes.”

As for colours she used in her design, Lindsay said: “Royal blue paints the stadium seats, fills the checkered pattern that accompanies the Como 1907 logo and is found on the players’ jerseys. Simultaneously, green subtly interjects through the field and within the mountain range beyond the stadium.”

Lindsay presented her silk scarf at the Comocrea Textile Design Show and she will present it at the Proposte Fair in Cernobbio.
