Como 1907 Announces Entry in The Soccer Tournament 2024 Field
Picturesque Italian Club and 2023 Quarterfinalist Returns to Cary, NC for TST
BOSTON, Mass. (March 21, 2024) – The Soccer Tournament (TST), the 7v7 event with a $1 million winner-take-all prize being played in Cary, NC from June 5-10 today announced the entry of Italian club Como 1907 in the 48-team event.
Como 1907, who currently play in Italy’s Serie B, return to TST after a run to the quarterfinals in the inaugural event. Como’s entry last year included legendary Spanish midfielder and Como 1907 co-owner Cesc Fabregas as the team’s manager, and the roster included two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash. Former Italian wunderkind and current Como 1907 star forward Patrick Cutrone won TST’s first Golden Boot with seven goals.
In addition to their on-field performance, Como 1907 left a lasting impact on the 35,000 fans in attendance at WakeMed Soccer Park last summer through their in-stadium activation and kids clinic on championship Sunday.
Situated on the shores of Lake Como, Como 1907 competes in Serie B but is currently in the running to be promoted to Italy’s top flight, Serie A, next season.
“We are a small club with big ambition. Located in one of the most beautiful places in the world, there is no other place like it,” said Como 1907 co-owner and soccer legend Cesc Fabregas. “We want everyone to come and experience it and fall in love with the soccer club, the city and the community. Last year we bought over 25 fans with us and it was humbling to see our ‘curva’ grow every day with the new fans at TST that got behind the team and can’t wait to do it all again this year”
“While the team fell just short of winning our inaugural event, Como 1907 stole the show in TST 2023,” said TST founder and CEO Jon Mugar. “The way they won over fans set a precedent for clubs for years to come. Fans will be ecstatic to welcome them back to Cary this June.”
TST will take place at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina from June 5-10. The 48-team men’s field will commence with group play on June 5-6, with teams being split into 12 groups of four. Thirty-two teams will emerge from the group stage to the knockout rounds, beginning on June 7. TST’s round of 16 and quarterfinals will take place on June 8, and the two semifinal matches will be played June 9.
TST’s inaugural women’s bracket will feature eight teams competing for an equal $1M, winner-take-all prize. The field will feature Heather O’Reilly’s team US Women, as well as additional clubs to be named later. The women’s event will begin June 7, and be broken into two groups of four. Two teams will advance from each group to play in the semifinals on June 9.
Both the men’s and women’s events will conclude in a winner-take-all championship doubleheader on June 10, with a total of $2M in prize money being awarded.
